5.24.2012
Objectives: SWBAT...
1. Read and analyze a local point of interest feature from an online publication.
2. Continue drafting features that incorporate both words and images.
3. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the three-part caption.
Do Now:
Follow the link here to read about an LPI. In a comment to this post address the following questions:

2. Identify six questions answered by the article: what, where, when, why, who and how. List them in order of importance.
3. What is the LPI featured in the story? What urban myth or legend is revealled in the comment section of the article? What are your thoughts on this piece of local lore? Can you think of any other fountains or bodies of water that are said to have supernatural qualities?
4. Would you drink from the fountain?
Class Work:
A. By now all food features should be complete consisting of no fewer than three paragraphs, strong examples of descriptive writing (i.e. the inclusion of imagery and sensory details) and accompanied by an appropriate image. Now all students are revising and editing their LPI (Local Point of Interest) features.
Use the middle part of class to be polishing these two pieces of journalistic writing.

Create comments that include three-part captions for the above images (label them appropriately B1, B2 and B3). Remember: catchy lead-in phrase, identify subject(s) using strong present tense action verb and finally include all additional information in the past tense.

2. What makes this restaurant special?
3. When did you decide to change the look of the place to make it more modern?
4. Where do you want to relocate if you had the chance to?
5. Why do you keep the business going?
6. How did you manage to keep the business going for 37 years+?
but in terms of visiting the Leitner Family Observatory and Planetarium.
1. Who does all the research here?
2. What do you want the audience to know?
3. When do you get a large crowd throughout the week?
4. Where does your researchers get their information?
5. Why do you think its important for you to show people what you find and/or talk about the planetarium?
6. How do you manage to work there?

Wooster Square
People who enjoy learning about Italian American Culture and who are interested in local history would be intrigued by this point of interest.
The small quaint neighborhood filled with Italian and Islamic styled Villas, Victorian row houses, fabulous pizzerias, bakeries, eateries and farmers markets makes Wooster square interesting. The relaxing neighborhood is inviting and very tranquil. Audience members might want to bring some money and an appetite (that’s if they’re fans of Italian cuisine).
Wooster Square is located to the east of Downtown New Haven, Connecticut. The significance of this location dates back to its history in the 1880’s. In 1825 the area was purchased by the city of New Haven and became a part of the city. During that time, the area was close to the city’s waterfront and by the 1840’s it became a residential area where ship captains and whole sale grocers built large houses because of its close proximity to the port.

Wooster Square was purchased in 1825 by the city of New Haven, but it became established as an inhabited area in 1840. The best time to visit the area is during the noon or evening, this way the audience could be able to appreciate the scenery in daylight and are also able to enjoy the restaurants.
When I visited Wooster Square for the first time I immediately fell in love with the scenery. It's like its own small town located in the city. It's interesting how its "city like" its surroundings is but when you enter Wooster Square it seems as though you're in another world.

Metro journalism students gather around and discuss the newly erected DeLauro Monument in historic Wooster Square. Seniors Garrett Barros and Luis Garcia Rivera were joined by juniors Christian Jordan, Donald Nelson, Charles Williams and Alex Chow-Yen. Can It be the First Burger??
Louis Lunch, a hamburger place on Crown Street, New Haven, claims to be the birthplace of the well known hamburger. The establishment was founded by its namesake Louis Lassen in 1895. The creation of the hamburger was in the 1900 when a gentlemen was in a hurry and stopped at Louis Lunch for a quick meal. Louis rushed to make the gentlemen a grab-and-go meal and placed a blend of ground steak trimmings between two slices of toast. And that was the start of the world known burger.
And Amity is punting the ball to the Governors.
Junior defensive end Alexander Chow-Yen makes the tackle for a loss in the Amity vs. Wilbur Cross game. You could see coach Mike urging Chow-Yen to skip the gap and shoot straight for the quarterback. After the hit it was 4th and 22 with Amity punting the ball.
