Journalism, Impetus?

Can journalism act as a catalyst for social change? That is the question, and my answer is yes-it depends. If I think journalism is a local newspaper or the Metro Line, then the chances of us making a big change are very thin. However if I think journalism is something like CNN or other big media outlets then yes I do believe they can perpetuate social change.

  2. Latiyah,

I find your thought(s) interesting but at odds with my own beliefs. I believe that smaller, more grassroots (what was the neologism for grassroots in the cyber-age?) reporting from outlets like the New Haven Independent, individual tweeters and bloggers have a better chance at organizing potential activists, while large media outlets such as CNN and FOX News continually spout info-tainment in an effort to maintain the status quo.

Consider the Arab Spring and the Occupy Movement.

Good use of vocabulary esp. your use of "impetus."
