SB 24

As most people are aware, two New Haven teachers, one from Celentano and one from Sound school are backing State Bill 24 (SB24). SB24 is a new state bill which seeks to increase seat time, lengthen the school day / year, and to increase the rigor in the class room. Of course there are two distinct sides to the story, one for increasing "rigor" in the school and one which thinks the extra work is unneccesary. On the "for" side, some of the higher-ranking students might benefit from the increased challenge from the system. On the "against" side, this policy can be very bad for students. I think that over-working students will cause less work to get done and make grades drop. These new policies will probably end up frustrating students and discouraging them to work rather than to motivate them to do better as the plan intended to. I think that having a longer school year micht make things more frustrating for students including those who are employed. This longer school day may interfer with their work schedule or other important after-school activities. Also, since many students neglect to do their homework in the first place, adding more to this will only cause grades to lower more. In my opinion I think that this bill is not going to help anyone nor will it raise any scores, skill levels, etc. This bill will most likely end up "backfiring by only making school harder and decreasing in any progress that there would have been if the schools had just enforced their policies more instead of trying to apply a new "usless" one.
